  ICC European Party 2007

ICC European Party 2007

ES There was a full house of over 300 last Monday (3 Dec.) evening at Luz de Gas, the top Barcelona nightclub. And the reason? Chess. ICC and chess, to be precise.

The ICC European Party turned out to be a resounding success for all concerned and was even honored by the presence of one of the world's top players in GM Judit Polgar, who played in a special ten board simul with a result of +8 -1 =1.

Taking part in the simul was Eduard Grau (EDUG), who won his spot and hotel accommodation in yet another exclusive ICC members competition. So far this year, ICC has held member-only competitions that have seen players winning trips to Mainz, Mexico, Gibraltar and now Barcelona!

Also on hand was Joel Berez, President of ICC and Pepo Viñas, General Secretary of FCE - Federació Catalana d'Escacs to announce publicly the signing of a new deal that will see ICC provide full online services to more than 7000 members!

And there's no chess show in Barcelona without its favorite son GM Miguel Illescas being involved, and the many time Spanish champion and second to GM Vladimir Kramnik used the occasion to unveil the new format of his entertaining Spanish magazine Peón de Rey now with 100 full color pages!

John's special guest this week (Tue., 4 Dec.) will be man-of-the-moment GM Hikaru Nakamura, the youngest US champion since Bobby Fischer. In 2004, at the age of 16, he won the US championship in San Diego.

Hikaru is regarded as something of a legend on ICC (playing under the handle of Smallville), where his status as one of the best blitz players in the world - both o.t.b and online - is seldom challenged. After a lean period on the international scene, Hikaru hit a purple patch in October with big back-to-back victories in two very strong European tournaments: the Magistral D'Escacs in Barcelona, and the Corsican Masters.

Next week (Tue., 11 Dec.), John's guest will be IM James Rizzitano.
