Dos Hermanas: Right Here, Right Now!

Dos HermanasStarting today, and for the ninth consecutive year, ICC is hosting the annual Internet Chess Tournament "Ciudad de Dos Hermanas" 2008.

New In Chess! The cash prize fund amounts to EUR 7,700 (about $12,000), with 2,000 Euro (roughly $3,400) first prize, plus additional class prizes and ICC membership prizes for amateur players. Entry is completely FREE and you DON'T even need to be a member of ICC to play!

This event is clearly the most important Internet chess tournament in the world, with the last two editions boasting an entry of over 2,000 players from all over the world! Last year's victor was former child prodigy and under-10 World Champion IM Jorge Sammour-Hasbun, who overcome an impressive field of 300 IM/GM’s, including top players Shahriyar Mamedyarov, Tigran L. Petrosian, Gata Kamsky, Hikaru Nakamura, Kiril Georgiev and Sergey Shipov.

As in previous editions, the playing system is as follows: twelve 12- round Swiss qualifiers using the playing rate: 3 minutes per game. Qualifiers are held twice a day from March 28th to April 2nd, and the finals are held on April 4th and 5th. The 12 qualifier winners plus the 20 best scores qualify to the 32 KO final.

Even if you are not aiming to win a prize, this tournament gives you a unique chance to meet world class players! We hope that Dos Hermanas will become the internet chess tourney of the year once again. Make sure to register early! Your registration is valid for all qualifiers, but you do not need to play all.

Full rules, guidelines and registrations can be found at our special Dos Hermanas website.

Please download the latest versions of Dasher (1.2) or BlitzIn (2.7) to play.

 Junior March Madness

Now you can super-charge ICC Dasher and obtain the most reliable analysis from the World Champion "Junior" chess engine. Junior is considered by many to be the strongest and most human-like of all the computer engines. Deep Junior drew a match with Kasparov, won a match with Radjabov, and, last summer, won a FIDE-organized match against Deep Fritz 4-2.

We are offering Junior at an EXCLUSIVE price for ICC-members only. The single-processor version (Junior) is available for $29.95 and the multi-processor version (Deep Junior) is available for $49.95. These prices are less than half of what you might pay from other vendors!

Even better, during the final days left in March only, if you sign up for a new ICC membership or renew an existing membership for a year or more, we'll take a further $10-20 off, bringing the price down to $19.95 for Junior and $29.95 for Deep Junior! All you need to do is sign up or renew online before purchasing Junior.

Once you are a member, it's easy to buy:
1) Download ICC Dasher 1.2.2 (Windows) for free
2) Sign into the ICC using Dasher
3) Select Purchase Junior Engine from the Web menu

After purchasing, you can download Junior to your computer for immediate use.

Junior integrates with ICC Dasher, allowing you to analyze your games or "Play vs. Computer" offline. Dasher 1.2 is a new release with more than 70 improvements over version 1.1, including player statistics, chat coloring, Vista compatilility, Atomic Chess support, and much more.

 Aronian Wins Amber

He's once, twice, three times a winner - and he's Levon Aronian, the Armenian #1, who has just played the tournament of his life to be the toast of the Melody Amber tournament in Nice, France.

After winning the combined and rapid titles by big margins with a round to spare, Aronian kept the champagne on ice for an extra day as he took a four-way tie with Topalov, Kramnik and Morozevich in the blindfold event.

At 25, Aronian is the eldest of a newer generation of elite players looking to make a name for himself with a possible title challenge on the back of his rise in the world rankings. He took the Corus title on tiebreak ahead of Magnus Carlsen back in January, and he’s now dominated the field to be the big winner of the Melody Amber.

GM Ronen Har-Zvi "New Ideas in the Marshall Attack"new

Ronen

One of the world’s first Grandmasters of chess, America’s Frank J. Marshall (1877-1944), left behind a lasting legacy to the chess world with his revered gambit against the Ruy Lopez – the Marshall Attack with 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Ba4 Nf6 5 0-0 Be7 6 Re1 b5 7 Bb3 0-0 8 c3 d5!

The Marshall Attack is one of the most important openings in the history of chess and is still deployed with regularity at super Grandmaster level. In current theory the ideas and strategies of both approaches are studied in-depth, and nowadays experts have come to the conclusion that White has no clear superiority in the main theoretical lines. And in the latest of his "New Ideas in..." series, GM Ronen Har-Zvi, takes a closer look under the microscope at Marshall's revolutionary idea.

"Chess Talk" with IM John Watson

John Watson ShowTune-in for Chess Talk with IM John Watson on ICC Chess.FM. John's weekly 60+ minute show (members only) will feature an interview with leading chess personalities. All shows run on demand for members after airing.

This week, joining IM John Watson on Chess Talk is Dutch IM Jeroen Bosch of SOS fame. A prolific writer for various chess publications, Jeroen found his niche in the chess market while working for New in Chess. His SOS article in the magazine continually perplexed (and pleasantly surprise) us with the seemingly endless stream of unorthodox opening ideas that soon spawned its own series of books.

The highly acclaimed SOS series put the fun back into studying openings again as it provided intermediate chess players with perfectly playable, easily digestible opening ideas: deviations from main line opening theory at a very early stage of the game (usually before move six).

Find below a selection of free 5-minute previews of the latest shows. To listen to the full shows, sign up for membership!

King's Gambit for the Creative Aggressor, The - Thomas Johansson

ICC StoreThe work comprises eleven chapters, an Introduction, index of variations and players, and a bibliography.

This is an excellent repertoire book, the author ignores less aggressive or over aggressive and discredited lines and wherever possible has selected sharp sidelines gleaned from some standard but also obscure sources. Although the book is 10 years old, the theory of the King’s Gambit does not move too much but be sure to check all the sharp stuff with Fritz just in case.

Hard cover, figurine algebraic notation, 173 pages, in both English and German.
