Nanjing Super GM Tournament 2008
China enters the super-tournament stakes for the first time with the 2008 Pearl Spring Chess Tournament, hosted at the luxurious Mingfa Pearl Spring Hotel in Nanjing, a subtropical city that once was the capital of China.
This event, already the strongest-ever in Asia, is looking to establish itself as the fourth major chess tournament on the circuit, after Wijk aan Zee, Linares and Dortmund. And they have an impressive line-up for the inaugural event: Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria), Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukraine), Levon Aronian (Armenia), Sergei Movsesian (Slovakia), Peter Svidler (Russia) and Bu Xiangzhi (China).
ICC will have live relays of all the games from December 11-21 (rest day Dec. 16), starting at 01:30am EST. Chess.FM will also have a daily Nanjing GOTD with GMs Larry Christiansen, Joel Benjamin and Ronen Har-Zvi - the first free for all, the rest members-only).

Mondays: GM Ronen Har-Zvi's "Yugoslav Attack, Dragon Sicilian"
 |
In the latest of his "New Ideas in...." series for ICC Chess.FM, GM Ronen Har-Zvi investigates the latest developments and trends in the ultimate test of the Sicilian Dragon, the Yugoslav Attack with 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6 6. Be3 Bg7 7. f3 0-0 8. Qd2 Nc6 9. Bc4.
The Sicilian Dragon is back in vogue once again thanks to its recent addition to Magnus Carlsen's ever-growing arsenal. Years ago, Bobby Fischer gave his seal of approval to the Yugoslav attack, stating it was simply a case of preying open the h-file and sac, sac...mate! But this caveman approach in the Yugoslav Attack is well-worked out, as GM Ronen Har-Zvi shows that the Dragon still breathes fire for black with plenty of counter-play.

Lasker's Manual of Chess (new edition) - Emanuel Lasker
Lasker's Manual of Chess is one of the greatest chess books ever written. The fact that it was first published over 80 years ago has diminished neither its relevance nor significance in today's modern chess world.
Lasker was both a wonderful fighter and a deep thinker; his book is the quintessence of the exceptionally successful experiences he had over many long years, and his thoughts about them. He teaches what he himself considers most important: general principles and methods applicable to any situation. Once you have read his Manual, you will become smarter - afterwards, this is bound to help you, both in chess and in life.
The 21st-century edition has been supplemneted with dozens of archival photographs of Lasker and his contemporaries. In addition, an entertaining and instructive feature, 'Lasker Lore', highlights the chess history and trivia of the Lasker era.
Finally, if the significance of Lasker's Chess Manual needed to offer more, the greatest chess instructor of the modern era, Mark Dvoretsky, has penned a special foreward to this new edition of the legendary classic.
