Elite Double-Header

There's certainly no shortage of top quality chess going on across the world right now to keep us entertained. And indeed, February 2009 may go down in the anthologies as the busiest month ever in the history of elite chess.
The Kamsky-Topalov World Chess Challenge match in Sofia, Bulgaria, currently hogs the headlines with the winner going on to meet world champion Vishy Anand later in the year in a $1 million plus title match. The score stands at 2-1 in the scheduled best-of-eight game match to hometown hero Veslelin Topalov, after American Gata Kamsky was left licking his wounds after a galling defeat in game two.
Meanwhile in Spain, Anand heads the field at the annual Linares supertournament, where he got off to the perfect start with an impressive opening round victory (the only one of the day) over Teimour Radjabov to take the early lead. But tragedy struck the world champion in round two, as he was sensationally felled by another young pretender in Levon Aronian, who now joins him in the lead on 1.5/2.
ICC Chess.FM will have full coverage of both events throughout! Our opening day coverage of Kamsky-Topalov started with Mig Greengard & five-time Russian champion Peter Svidler! And the regular grandmaster team will also be in action, including Joel Benjamin, Larry Christiansen, Gregory Kaidanov, Jon Speelman, Ronen Har-Zvi, Nick De Firmian, John Fedorowicz and newcomers to the team, Jan Gustafsson and Jonathan Rowson!

Man in a Suitcase: Macauley Peterson
|
|
Our man always at the ready at the departure gate with his passport and video camera at hand, Macauley Peterson, leaves no continent untouched in our quest here at ICC Chess.FM to bring you the brightest and best video coverage and interviews from all the world's major chess events and personalities.
He started the year off in Norway at the Aker Chess Challenge before heading to Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands for Corus. From there, he caught a plane to London and onto Gibraltar, and then back to the US for a little technical advice to those good folks at the St. Louis Chess Club, who will be staging the US Championship (watch this space for future developments!) there, running May 7th-17th. The next day, he was heading to the airport again for the first available flight to Sofia, Bulgaria, for the eagerly-awaited Kamsky-Topalov World Chess Challenge. And from there? Yes, you guessed it. Our intrepid globetrotter will be jetting off to Spain to squeeze in the final rounds of Linares for us.
You can follow all his travels in the ICC Chess.FM blog. Checkout now the latest additions to the blog, including an exclusive 25 min audio interview with Magnus Carlsen and video coverage of Gibraltar, scene of yet another victory for Chess.FM favorite and five-time Russian champion Peter Svidler.

John Nunn's Chess Puzzle Book (new enlarged edition)
Most chess puzzle books put you in an artificial situation: you are told a combination exists, what the theme is and what you are required to achieve. This one is different. In a real game, a player may sometimes need to find a combination. On the other hand he may have to reject a tactical idea and simply find a good positional move. His task is to find the right move, whatever it may be.
The 300 puzzles in this book put you precisely in that situation. Spectacular ideas abound in these positions, but it is for you to decide whether to go in for them, or whether you would be falling into a trap. If you need them, there are hints to help you on your way. The book ends with a series of tests to measure your skills against those of other players.

Opening for White According to Anand Vol. 11 - Alexander Khalifman
In this book Alexander Khalifman has analyzed the sharp variations, which have always been the focus of White's ambitions to refute the Dragon in a concrete and swift fashion (following the famous thesis of Robert Fischer: h2-h4-h5 and a checkmate...). We do not assert that the Dragon has been refuted, but we are practically convinced that Black has great problems to solve in all the variations and the players for the White side, who have studied this book thoroughly will be completely prepared to face all possible intricacies of this opening system.
We have analyzed the more aggressive plan 5.Nc3 Bg7 6.Be3 Nf6 7.Bc4 (Yugoslav Accelerated Dragon), which usually leads to the main lines of the Yugoslav Attack in the Dragon variation.
