Main Story March Madness, Blitz Style

The Black Lion
After a dramatic week of 12 qualifiers hosted exclusively here at www.chessclub.com, the ICC version of "March Madness" and the science of bracketology now comes into play as the world's strongest online blitz tournament, Dos Hermanas, reached the decisive 32-player knockout finals.

Click here for brackets for Dos Hermanas 32-player finals, scores and game download so far.

Battling it out for the €7,600 (about $9,600) prize fund were 27 GMs, 2 IMs, 1 FM and two untitled players. And from 32, we're now down to the final 8 - and yet again defending two-time champion Jorge Sammour-Hasbun is among the mix in a 7-strong GM quarter-final!

Will Jorge again defy the odds as an untitled player for a a remarkable three-in-a-row, or will one of the top-seeded GMs, such as Hikaru Nakamura, Ivan Cheparinov or Yury Vovk finally end his remarkable winning run to take the top prize of €2,000 (roughly $2,500) at this year's Dos Hermanas?

And you have a courtside seat here at ICC by being a member (click here to join or try 7-day free trial) to follow all the action as it unfolds game by game for Saturday's decisive shootout for the title (+ch 227 for all the channel chat). Play gets underway Saturday, 21st March at 15:00 EDT (20:00CET).

Chess Explained: The Main-Line Slav - David Vigorito

ICC Store The Main-Line Slav is one of the key battlegrounds of modern chess, with adherents among all levels of chess-players. It is notoriously difficult for White to prove any advantage against Black's solid set-up, while the lack of symmetry in the position provides scope for creative players to obtain winning chances with either colour. This book discusses all major lines following the moves 1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6 3 Nf3 Nf6 4 Nc3 dxc4. There are many strategic directions the play can take: sometimes the center is blasted open and piece-play dominates, while in other cases the centre becomes fixed, or remains dynamic well into the middlegame. Vigorito dissects the most important themes and nuances, placing them firmly in the context of the practical struggle, making sure that readers will be familiar with the resources at their disposal, and understand when to employ them.

Chess Tactics For Advanced Players - Yuri Averbakh

ICC Store Any chess enthusiast knows how important tactics are in the "royal game" and how crucial it is to make a thorough study of this aspect of the game. But up to now opinion has been divided on the best way of studying tactics. The well-known Soviet international grandmaster and chess author Averbakh has developed an entirely novel approach, which is expounded in the present work. His main aim was to create a theoretical basis with whose aid the learner can effortlessly study the numerous and manifold tactical problems facing the chess player. Averbakh begins by examining the simplest situations resulting from confrontations between different pieces. He then proceeds to analyse more complex situations and demonstrates the importance of the double attack. With instructive examples he proves that double attacks in the broadest sense are the basis of most tactical operations.

Chess Explained: The Grunfeld - Valentin Bogdanov

ICC Store The Grünfeld Defence is one of the most aggressive openings at Black's disposal. He creates immediate imbalance and plans to strike at White's centre with all available resources. An insipid response from White may not even retain equality, so in the main lines he takes up the gauntlet: he creates a large pawn-centre and puts this to use to launch an attack. While the theory of these lines has been extensively developed, there is a coherent logical thread running through them: the Grünfeld is essentially an opening of grand ideas, which need to be understood well in order to get to grips with the theory and handle the resulting positions. This book provides a discussion of all major lines, and a special contribution from Viacheslav Eingorn on the key ideas of the Rb1 Exchange main line, which he was instrumental in developing in the 1970s and 1980s.
