Nalchik Grand Prix
|
The FIDE Grand Prix continues in the Russian city of Nalchik as the president of the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic, Arsen Kanokov, stepped in at the eleventh hour to save the series by funding the fourth GP tournament there. Ironically, despite the upheaval and uncertainty of the Grand Prix series, GP No.4 has turned out to be the strongest yet of the series.
The fourteen participants include (in alphabetical order): Vladimir Akopian (Armenia), Evgeny Alekseev (Russia), Levon Aronian (Armenia), Etienne Bacrot (France), Pavel Eljanov (Ukraine), Boris Gelfand (Israel), Alexander Grischuk (Russia), Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukraine), Gata Kamsky (USA), Sergey Karjakin (Ukraine), Rustam Kasimdzhanov (Uzbekistan), Peter Leko (Hungary), Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan) and Peter Svidler (Russia).
Leading the early charge for the top prize is the in-form Russian Alexander Grishcuk, who leads the field unbeaten on 3/4 by half a point ahead of Karjakin, Kamsky, Leko, Alekseev and Aronian.
You can follow the action live each day here at ICC from 07:00 a.m., April 15-29 (rest days April 20 & 25).

Foxwoods Open
The 11th Foxwoods Open over the Easter weekend had a stellar field that included grandmaster top seeds such as former U.S. champions Hikaru Nakamura (ICC: Smallville), Alexander Shabalov and Alexander Yermolinsky (ICC: Sweere), reigning U.S. champion Yury Shulman (ICC: PenguinTail), top Dutch player Loek van Wely (ICC: KingLoek), and the 1998 World Junior champion Darmen Sadvakasov (ICC: Dzhigit) from Kazakhstan, who now lives in the U.S.
Foxwoods has also proved to be a happy hunting ground for rising teenage star Robert Hess (ICC: RLH2), 17, from New York, who gained his first grandmaster norm there last year. He went on to gain a second at the Spice Cup in Lubbock, Texas, and completed his third and final norm again at Foxwoods with another phenomenal performance to now become America's newest GM-elect.
You can checkout some of the action form Foxwoods, including the dramatic playoff for the title between Schulman and Sadvakasov, with Betsy Dynako's photo/video montage over at ICC's sister site World Chess Live.
