Main Story Kasparov on Junior

Who could forget Garry Kasparov's Man v Machine match of 2003 in New York against Deep Junior? It was billed as a "grudge match with the machines" and was viewed across the globe with extensive coverage from ESPN.

For Kasparov the contest was an opportunity to avenge his 1997 defeat in the same city to IBM's Deep Blue. The then world No.1 was better prepared for this match than he was against Deep Blue, and was supremely confident of victory - and yet the machine again confounded him.

With the match evenly poised at 2.5-2.5 (one win each and 3 draws) going into the final game 6, the capacity audience believed Kasparov to hold a slight edge but were amazed when he erred on the side of caution by offering a draw - only to be equally amazed as the machine declined and made him sweat for another 5 moves before offering a draw to tie the match at 3-3.

In the post-game interview on ESPN, Kasparov explained he would have pressed for a win in a similar position against a human opponent but feared a tiny mistake would have been severely punished by the computer. "I had one item on my agenda today, not to lose," he said. "I decided it would be wiser to stop playing.
