Corus on Fire!
Alexei Shirov is definitely bringing the Fire on Board at Corus - he's now redder than red-hot with an amazing perfect start of 4/4 to lead going into the first rest-day at Wijk aan Zee.
So far, Shirov has beaten Fabiano Caruana, Peter Leko, Sergei Tiviakov and Jan Smeets to establish a one-point lead at the top over Hikaru Nakamura, Magnus Carlsen and Vassily Ivanchuk. We need to go back to Wijk 1998 for Vladimir Kramnik starting 4-0 - and then he lost in round five to none other than Shirov himself!
Play resumes at Corus on Thursday with Shirov (vs. Loek Van Wely) looking to break that particular record with a fifth consecutive win. Thursday also sees the big clash of young guns Nakamura and Carlsen - this is one match-up (and seeing if Shirov can make it to 5-0) being reason enough to be here on ICC for our continued live coverage of Corus.
ICC members have been amazed of the analytical skills of five-time Russian champion Peter Svidler when he's joined us for two days during our live coverage here on Chess.FM.Check below for free links for non-members to view both his 5 hour rebroadcast of round two and his GOTD from round three - these are normally member-only services, but we thought we'd give you just a sample of one of the bonuses of being an ICC member. To view all the other GOTDs and our continued live coverage, join ICC now.
