This week, in a special edition of Chess Talk, IM John Watson paid tribute to former Soviet world champion Vasily Vasilyevich Smyslov, who died last week in Moscow, aged 89.This was just one of many tributes ICC paid to Smyslov, with others coming from Larry Christiansen and Joel Benjamin.
Smyslov was as a titan of the game who had a long and distinguished career that spanned four decades and almost included a title challenge into his sixties. Throughout the 1950s, his results were better than anyone's. It was during this period he had a series of titanic tussles for the world crown with rival Botvinnik - three world tile matches in 1954, 1957 and 1958; the first of which was tied 12-12, the second Smyslov won, only to lose the third in a rematch after holding the title for just a year.
