Tournament Times Anand-Topalov: Let the games begin

Despite a one-day setback caused by the worldwide travel chaos of the erupting Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland, we're now ready to rumble in Sofia, as Viswanathan Anand - after his 40-hour drive to get there! - defends his World Championship title against challenger Veselin Topalov.

The formalities of the official press conference and the opening ceremony is now over, and the games are about to begin with Topalov having white in game 1 on Saturday, 24 April, with play starting at 10:00am ICC Time (the rest of the games though will start at 08:00am ICC Time).

And who better to join us here on Chess.FM as our opening weekend commentator for this intriguing title match-up than 5-time Russian champion GM Peter Svidler? They don't come any better than Svidler, and he'll be giving us all of his expert analysis and spin on the first two games from Sofia.

On Saturday, he'll be joined by IM Malcolm Pein, and on Sunday, with Chess.FM's Macauley Peterson. So why not sign-up for ICC now (click here to join) to get the best in chess commentary by tuning in to Peter Svidler this coming World Championship weekend?

Chess.FM will also have Game of the Day and New In Chess trivia, where each day during play at the World Championship members can win ICC extensions and and a 1-year subscription to the world's best chess magazine, New In Chess.

So will it be Anand or will it be Topalov? According to ICC's poll on www.chessclub.com, it will be Anand by the proverbial mile with almost 68% of the vote. You can also have your say before the match starts by going to www.chessclub.com and recording your vote.

In his weekly Gambit Guide series on ICC, Boris investigates gambits old and new and show that, while some may not be actively played on the grandmaster circuit these days, they are all exciting to play and at the same time instructive as they teach us all about natural development of the pieces and tactics in chess. GM Boris Alterman has an official blog where, among other things, he'll be discussing some of his choices for his Gambit Guide.

There's no question that the late great David Bronstein (1924-2006) was a true chess genius. He was an independent thinker at the board, and his original ideas almost single-handedly re-invented the King's Indian Defense in the 1950s.

He was even willing to play dynamic gambits in the most important of situations, such as the 1956 Candidates Tournament in Amsterdam, when he shocked Boris Spassky and the chess world with a stunning queen sacrifice in the Sämisch variation with 5.f3 0-0 6.Be3 e5 7.d5 Nh5 8.Qd2 Qh4+!? - with Black getting two bishops and two pawns for the queen in a very unbalanced position.

The variation is still unclear to this day, and it makes for a very good surprise weapon to have in your arsenal.  And in his latest series of Gambit Guide for Chess.FM, GM Boris Alterman takes a closer look at the Bronstein influence in the Sämisch variation with an extended series starting with his daring queen sacrifice.
