In the 1960s, it was Boris Spassky who kept the flag flying for the swashbuckling King's gambit at elite level with memorable wins over David Bronstein - which later became immortalized in the opening sequence to the James Bond movie From Russia with Love - and Bobby Fischer. Now it is Magnus Carlsen going back to the future in elite tournaments, as the Norwegian world #1 took everyone by surprise by using the venerable King's gambit to good effect to score his first win at the Bazna King's Tournament.
Carlsen beat China's Wang Yue to conclude a brutal round four - with all three games being decisive - and to take the joint lead on 2.5/4 . He's joined at the top with Azeri Teimour Radjabov, who stormed Boris Gelfand's fortress for an impressive victory - and one that was an easy Game of the Day pick for resident Chess.FM site pro GM Larry Christiansen.
