Tournament Times NH Tournament

The 2010 edition of the popular Rising Stars vs. Experience NH Tournament, in collaboration with the Monaco-based Association Max Euwe and NH Hoteles, reaches the midpoint at the Grand Hotel Krasnapolosky in the heart of the Dutch capital Amsterdam.

The 'Experience' team (Gelfand, Svidler, Heine Nielsen, van Wely and Ljubojevic ) won last year, but find themselves trailing, 11.5-13.5, to the 'Rising Stars' (Nakamura, Caruana, So, Giri and Howell) and have it all to do in the second half.

This Scheveningen team tournament also has the added attraction of the highest-scorer in the Rising Stars team receiving an automatic invite to the 2011 elite Amber Blindfold and Rapid Tournament in Nice, France. Last year Jan Smeets of The Netherlands was the surprise package to win the hot-ticket to Amber - just who will it be this year?

Individual scores:

Rising Stars
Giri 3.5
Caruana 3
Howell 2.5
Nakamura 2.5
So 2

Experience
Gelfand 3.5
Svidler 2.5
Ljubojevic 2
Nielsen 2
van Wely 1.5

Tournament Times Andreikin takes the World

Congratulations to GM Dmitry Andreikin (DSquared & Vladimirovich on ICC) on becoming the first Russian in over 11 years to win the World Junior Championship title!

Top seed Andreikin and fellow countryman Sanan Sjugirov both top-scored on 10/13, a full point ahead of the chasing pack in Chotowa, Poland. But Andreikin, who led from start to finish, had the big tiebreak advantage to claim gold with Sjugirov silver, and local Polish player Dariusz Swiercz the bronze on tiebreak ahead of Maxim Matlakov of Russia, Saleh Salem of UAE and Jon Ludvig Hammer of Norway.

The World Junior Championship series first started in 1951 and future World Champions such as Boris Spassky, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov and Vishy Anand all got their break on the world stage by first winning the junior title. Andreikin - who won the ICC Arctic Chess Challenge qualifier, but regretfully declined the opportunity to go to Tromso in preference to representing his country in the World Junior Championship - is the first Russian to claim the World Junior title since GM Alexander Galkin in 1999.
