Tournament Times Nanjing Nightly on Chess.FM!

The elite circus moves at an almost breathless speed these days, going from Bilbao to Nanjing in China for the Pearl Spring Masters running 20th-30th October, featuring a stellar field that includes Magnus Carlsen, Vishy Anand, Veselin Topalov, Vugar Gashimov, Wang Yue and Etienne Bacrot.

It was in Nanjing last year that Carlsen made his running for the #1 spot with a phenomenal winning streak, and now, after his recent slump, he has the chance to salvage his top spot after his recent rating drop with another repeat performance from last year - but I dare say Anand and Topalov will have something to say about it!

The pairings of the first round has already been announced on Monday's opening ceremony: Anand-Wang Yue, Carlsen-Bacrot and Topalov-Gashimov. Rounds 1-9 start at 2:30 PM local time (2:30 AM ICC / 11:30 PM Pacific daylight / 8:30 AM CET), and round 10 at 10 AM local time (10 PM ICC / 7 PM Pacific daylight / 4 AM CET)

Rest day: October 25th (after round 5).

And despite it being played during the wee small hours here on ICC (2:30AM start!), for the first time ever, our dedicated site pros at Chess.FM have volunteered to be on the air and working the graveyard shift to bring you all the best in the live action (and GOTD highlights) from Nanjing! Mig and GM Ronen Har-Zvi will be sharing the hosting seat throughout, and they will be joined by GMs Joel Benjamin, Larry Christiansen, Alex Yermolinsky, Varuzhan Akobian, Jon Speelman and Aussie newbie David Smerdon!

Tournament Times ICC SOS Charity Simul

In the past, ICC has readily made its services and spirited community open to aid charity simuls, most notably by elite superstars such as World Champion Vishy Anand and world #1 Magnus Carlsen. Recently though, our community was shocked of hearing of the terrible plight of Ukrainian WIM Galina Shliahtich, whose health has recently worsened due to multiple sclerosis and tuberculosis.

And this coming weekend of Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th October, two of ICC's most active Ukrainian Grandmasters, Yuri Vovk (Imperator15) and Valeriy Aveskulov (Prokuror), along with Argentinian IM Alejo de Dovitiis (dedo2) will be generously giving of their time by holding fund raising events on ICC to help contribute to Galina's mounting medical costs.

Participation in either simul or Play the Master events requires a donation of at least 20 chekels, but any donation would be greatly appreciated, even if you do not plan to participate. For the schedule and information on how to contribute to the fund, please take the time to visit our charity fund page now at http://www.chessclub.com/groups/ShliahtichFund.

Tournament Times USCL Week 9

Another kicking it high recently in the US Chess League has been Chess.FM's Larry Christiansen. In the past three weeks, Larry has won two Game of the Week prizes - his latest, for his Week 8 win over IM Jonathan Schroer, was a typical LarryC tactical meleé as his team, the Boston Blitz, moves closer to securing the second spot in the Eastern Division

In the West, as the league moves into the penultimate week of play in the regular season Chicago takes on Miami, with both desperately fighting for a coveted playoff spot; with the Seattle Sluggers taking on the San Francisco Mechanics with the Sluggers in a must win situation and the Mechanics trying to make sure they don't miss the postseason for the first time in the league's history.
