At the Tal Memorial in Moscow, Levon Aronian holds the sole lead at the midpoint by virtue of two mightily impressive wins with White over tough-nuts-to-crack Vladimir Kramnik and Boris Gelfand - and two games that proved easy pickings for expert analysis by GM Yasser Seirawan for his GOTD selections (see table below - members only).
Performance-wise, the Armenian No 1 has hit a purple patch. The new official FIDE rating list came out at the beginning of the month with Vishy Anand first on 2804 ahead of Magnus Carlsen 2802 and Aronian 2801, making him only the sixth player - after Kasparov, Kramnik, Anand, Topalov and Carlsen - to join the exclusive club of those who have crossed the 2800 mark.
And he continues to climb further on Hans Arild Runde's unofficial live rating list to 2809 (behind Carlsen on 2812), as he stands tall at the Tal Memorial to lead on 3/4, a half point ahead of the chasing pack of Grischuk, Mamedyarov, Nakamura, Karjakin and Wang Hao.
