Aronian Blitz's Moscow!
Despite losing his last two games (not to mention also three of his last four!), Levon Aronian of Armenia had built up a hefty lead going into the final day of play at the World Blitz Championship in Moscow, and his final tally of 24.5 out of 38 was good enough to claim the crown.
Aronian had a half a point advantage ahead of Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan, who scored 8 out of 10 to almost sneak an unlikely, come-from-behind win. Unfortunately, his one loss, in the penultimate round to Sergey Movsesian, gave Aronian the break he needed for outright victory.
Favorite and defending champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway was third, on 23.5 point, with Boris Gelfand of Israel and Hikaru Nakamura of USA sharing fourth place, on 21.5 points. Seregey Karjakin and Vladimir Kramnik finished tied for fifth on 20.5 points, but Karjakin claimed the Russian Blitz championship title on tiebreaks from the former world champion.
Many ICC members enjoyed the three-day blitz bonanza - and especially GM Yasser Seirawan's live commentary throughout!
GM Yasser Seirawan will be back to join the Chess.FM team for our extended coverage of next month's London Chess Classic, 8th-15th December - the final classic of the year that includes a stellar line up of Vishy Anand, Magnus Carlsen, Vladimir Kramnik, Hikaru Nakamura, Michael Adams, Nigel Short, Luke McShane and David Howell. So now is the time to become an ICC member by clicking here to tune in to all the best in online live chess commentary with the Chess.FM team.

USCL Championship Match Final

vs
 |
This coming Saturday, 20th November, sees the sixth season showdown of the US Chess League with the final Championship Match between New England Nor'easters and Miami Sharks taking place here on ICC, starting at 6pm EST.
This will be Miami's third trip to the USCL Championship. They came up short the first two times, last year getting to the final game of the blitz tiebreaker before losing. For New England, with a remarkable 11-1 performance, it has been nothing short of a fairytale first season for them, culminating in a Championship match decider.
Whatever the result, it's bound to be a fitting finale to what unquestionably has been the best USCL season yet - and Chess.FM will be on the air live to cover every move of the final with GMs Ronen Har-Zvi and Alex Yermolinsky.
The line ups for both teams have already been announced (see below).
New England Nor'easters (11.0 – 1.0) vs Miami Sharks (7.5 – 4.5)
Time Control - Game in 90 with 30 second increment
If the match ties 2 – 2, there will be a special tiebreaker. |

En Passant - GM Larry M. Evans (1932-2010)

|
ICC was saddened to hear that American Grandmaster and prolific journalist Larry Melvyn Evans died earlier this week in Washoe Hospital in Reno, Nevada, from complications following a gall bladder operation. He was 78.
Larry Evans was among the first generation of US chess players to emerge after the second world war from the vibrant New York Chess scene. He is a five-time US champion and was one of his country's best Olympiad players over a twenty-six year period from 1950 to 1976, along the way winning gold (1950), silver (1958) and bronze (1976) medals for his individual performances.
Despite his excellent chess performances during the 1950s and early 1960s, he will perhaps though always be best remembered by his chess writing and his relationship with Bobby Fischer, especially his work on My 60 Memorable Games, where he not only was the one who finally convinced a reluctant Fischer to publish the book, but also wrote the introduction to each of the games. He authored several books on the game and also wrote a very popular Q&A column for over thirty years for Chess Life that was controversially cut in 2006, and his weekly syndicated column, Evans on Chess, appeared in more than fifty newspapers across the US.
Fuller obituaries on the life and times of Larry M. Evans has been posted by Larry Parry at Chess Life Online and by GM Lubosh Kavalek at the Huffington Post. Here at Chess.FM, GM Larry Christiansen dedicated his members-only show this week to Evans - and as a mark of appreciation for the wider chess public, ICC has made this show free for all to listen to by clicking here.
