"Supergrandmaster" tournaments don't always deliver the excitement that the name implies, but the tiny hamlet of Wijk aan Zee on the Dutch north coast has always lived up to the billing - and this year, under the banner of new title sponsor Tata Steel Chess will be no different than any of the others in the long and storied history of what has always been regarded as the first 'major' of the year.

For the 73rd edition of the tournament, the top-ranking 14-player A group is headed by world #1 and defending champion Magnus Carlsen, and also includes world champion Viswanathan Anand, his predecessor Vladimir Kramnik, world #3 Levon Aronian, Alexander Grischuk, Hikaru Nakamura, Ruslan Ponomariov, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Wang Hao, Alexey Shirov, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Anish Giri, Jan Smeets and Erwin l'Ami.

But wait, there's more - there's also a B group and a C group with a host of minor stars - such as David Navara, Wesley So, Le Quang Liem, Luke McShane and Jon Ludvig Hammer - as the side events rather than the main attraction of Carlsen & Co. All in all a veritable smorgasbord of top-class chess is coming your way soon, with the Tata Steel Chess Tournament running 15th-30th January.
