Online Global Indian Summer
Recently in India, Vishy Anand opened the 50th World Junior Chess Championship in Channai, an event that the current world champion won back in 1987. India is also heavily favored to host the 2012 World Championship clash between Anand and Boris Gelfand. And later this year, India's Humpy Koneru will challenge China's Hou Yifan for the Women's World Championship title.
So it's no stretch of the imagination to say that India is fast becoming the epicenter of what's best-in-chess these days - no wonder then that India is now also set to storm the online chess world with a new tournament in partnership with the Internet Chess Club! Grassroots Chess Promotions Pvt. Ltd. (in association with the All India Chess Federation) and ICC have joined forces to bring to the worldwide chess community the first India Global Internet Speed Chess Tournament, running 20-21 & 27-28 August, that will have a guaranteed prize fund of $9000 (plus many additional bonus prizes on offer).
This new online tournament will also have different rating bands with lots of big cash prizes on offer (see table below) that will allow you to play within your own playing strength. Not only that, but because of how we've structured the tournament (if you are untitled or rated below FIDE 2200) you can get the chance to play not in one but two tournaments! Not only that, but registration to the tournament is sufficient with ICC membership not being mandatory to play - but you MUST first have a username to go to the sign-up page.
